Phonetics

This project was inspired by something really personal to me, the constant mispronunciation of names that aren’t “Western.” Growing up, I noticed how often people would struggle (or just not try) to say names from different cultures correctly. On the other side, non-English speakers often have a hard time with English words too, simply because no one ever teaches how to move your mouth or shape sounds that don’t exist in your language. It’s not just about language, it’s about respect, identity, and connection. That’s what led me to create Phonetics; a website that helps people learn how to pronounce names and words from different cultures, encouraging understanding, inclusivity, and a genuine curiosity for the world around us.

Progress

I started by choosing this issue because it’s something I’ve personally experienced and cared deeply about. I did more research to understand how mispronunciation impacts people’s sense of identity and belonging, and I ran a survey to define my target audience. From there, I began designing the website, focusing on making it welcoming, educational, and easy to use. Once the core idea was in place, I developed the brand identity and created a range of promotional materials including posters and an informative video ad to bring Phonetics to life and spread its message of cultural respect and connection.
